Next week, the Govs will look to battle Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson, who beat Austin Peay in the ASUN Championship last year.
Austin Peay vs. Florida Gulf Coast
The Governors will host the Eagles on Feb 13 inside F&M Bank Arena. FGCU is the No. 1 team in the ASUN, sitting with a conference record of 8-2. The two losses coming from Queens on Jan. 4 and Eastern Kentucky on Jan. 25.
The Eagles struggled at the beginning of the season, starting out 5-8 in non-conference matchups, but have had success on the defensive side. FGCU is second in the ASUN in defense, holding their opponents to an average of 68.1 points per game.
Offensively, the Eagles average 71.1 points per game, while Austin Peay averages 69.2.
This game will be about who can get their offense moving. In Wednesday’s game against North Alabama, the Governors relied on Sai Witt under the basket. He finished the night with 17 points. Issac Haney led the Governors in scoring with 24 points, with 12 points coming from behind the 3-point arc. Austin Peay will look to find more offensive production from players such as L.J. Thomas, Quan Lax and freshman Tate McCubin.
Austin Peay vs. Stetson
For the first time since they met in the ASUN Championship game last year, Austin Peay will host the Stetson Hatters on Feb. 15 at 4 p.m.
Before making their way to Clarksville, Stetson will see matchups against Jacksonville, Eastern Kentucky and Lipscomb.
The Hatters currently sit in eighth place in the ASUN standings with an overall record of 7-16 and a conference record of 5-5. Stetson is sixth in the ASUN in offensive production, averaging 73.2 points per game. However, the Hatters are coming off a two-game losing streak with losses to North Florida and FGCU.
This is a team that may be able to score but has also struggled defensively. The Hatters are second to last in the ASUN in defense, allowing opponents to average 82.5 points per game. Austin Peay has struggled with rebounds this season but has had strong defensive outings. McCubbin averages 1.4 steals a game, and L.J. Thomas averages 1.2; both rank in the Top 20 in the ASUN.
