CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – New reports from the Centers for Disease Control now advocate the public wear protective face masks if engaging in essential activities.
The CDC and health officials maintain that the best course of action is still to maintain social distancing, adhere to Safer at Home guidelines, and practice the 6-foot rule at all times.
However, as the CDC continues to monitor the spread of novel coronavirus around the world, protective cloth face masks for the general public are a beneficial option.
Many are questioning the efficacy of the face masks, as previous reports stated the cloth face masks would not protect against coronavirus.
According to the CDC, ” a significant portion of individuals with coronavirus lack symptoms (“asymptomatic”) and that even those who eventually develop symptoms (“pre-symptomatic”) can transmit the virus to others before showing symptoms. This means that the virus can spread between people interacting in close proximity—for example, speaking, coughing, or sneezing—even if those people are not exhibiting symptoms.”
In light of this new evidence, cloth face coverings are now recommended in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. This includes grocery stores, hardware stores, and pharmacies.
The cloth face masks also limit a person’s ability to touch their mouth or nose while out. Proper hand washing and sanitizing surfaces regularly is essential to limiting the spread of germs.
The cloth face masks are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators. Officials insist those remain critical supplies for health care workers and medical first responders.
In addition to face masks, the public is still encouraged to practice good hygiene and stay home.
