CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Veteran, law enforcement officer and pastor Dexter L. Mines has announced his candidacy for sheriff of Montgomery County.

Mines has more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement, the military, ministry and public safety leadership. “I’ve dedicated my life to protecting and serving,” said Mines. “As sheriff, I’ll lead with transparency, accountability, and connection – building trust and ensuring every resident feels safe and respected.”

Mines’ career includes service with the Chattanooga Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (ESU Unit), and Greenbrier Police Department, where he served as a School Resource Officer. He later became assistant director of the Tennessee POST Commission, overseeing officer certification and training statewide, and an instructor at the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy.

Nationally, he has served as a senior implementation strategist with the Center for Policing Equity, advising government leaders, including the White House Office of Personnel Management, on equitable public safety strategies.

A U.S. Army veteran, senior pastor of Community Outreach Christian Ministries, and board member of the Cunningham Volunteer Fire Department, Mines continues his lifelong commitment to service and mentorship. He holds a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Bethel University and is a certified EMT.

“I believe in leading by example, serving with integrity, and putting people first,” Mines said. “Together, we can build a Sheriff’s Office that reflects the values and strength of Montgomery County.”
