CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – David W. Shelton, longtime community activist, business owner, writer and columnist, has announced his candidacy for Montgomery County Commission, District 21.
Shelton said his activism has long been focused on fairness, justice and equality. He has worked to create awareness for complex issues of all types, including addressing LGBT+ equality and conversations on race relations, and looking to find common ground to build a constructive dialogue.
“I’ve been a part of the community all my life, and now this is an opportunity to serve once more,” Shelton said. He said he will run on a platform of building the quality of life in Montgomery County, and sees a need to expand major first responder services in rural areas.
“We have a dire need to add new bays for ambulances, and improve our firefighter protection in the county,” he said. “Also, my dad fought for a Juvenile Justice Detention Center to be built in Montgomery County, and I intend to take up that mission now that he’s retiring.” Other issues include working with the city and county governments to improve parking downtown, and use common sense and thoughtfulness to zoning issues without being a rubber stamp.
Shelton graduated from Clarksville High School in 1989, and went on to study at Middle Tennessee State University and later Bethel University, and began a career in graphic design, illustration, and marketing.
He is a member of the Leadership Clarksville Class of 2016, and has served on the Clarksville Human Relations Commission, and presently sits on the After Hours Board and the Parking Commission.
District 21 covers a portion of south Clarksville, south of the Red River, north of the Bypass, roughly between Golf Club Lane and Richview Road.
He is running as an independent, and will appear on the Aug. 4 ballot. His website is https://sheltonfor21.com.
