David Paul Nussbaumer Jr. passed away at home surrounded by his family on September 30, 2024.
He was born at home in Oak Grove, Kentucky on October 5, 1932, to Johanna Elizabeth and David Paul Nussbaumer, Sr., who were immigrants from Switzerland. He was the oldest son of six children: Christa (James) Holleman of Clarksville, Christoph (Katy) Nussbaumer of Clarksville, Heidi (Joe) Hough of California, Annemarie (Howard) Harrod of Nashville, and John (Beverly) Nussbaumer of Colorado.
David was a Christian, devoted husband and father. He graduated from Clarksville High School and married his high school love and sweetheart, Betty Jean Collier, in November 1954 — nearly a 70-year honeymoon if he was asked. Together, they raised five children: Lydia Marie (Bill) Sullivan, David Paul (Janette) Nussbaumer III of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Collier Brent (Karen) Nussbaumer of Clarksville, Tammy Gayle (Ray) Bevans of Clarksville and Heidi Rebekah Nussbaumer of Clarksville. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
David was known for his love and dedication as a public servant to his beloved community of Montgomery County and Clarksville, Tennessee. While still in high school, he was a milkman with his family’s dairy, Walnut Grove Dairy. When David and Betty first married, he later took on the world of insurance and started his own insurance agency known as Nussbaumer Insurance Agency in the early 1960s. His daughter, Tammy Nussbaumer Bevans, joined him in 2001 at the agency. When asked why insurance, he said, “It was not originally for the enjoyment.” It was “because I had to put food on the table, and being a milkman did not cut it!” He later came to love the business and found great joy and peace “when I could deliver a check to a grieving spouse or children.”
David served as a Montgomery County Commissioner, Mayor Pro Tem, over 39 years on the City Council, in which he was on numerous committees such as Gas and Water, Police, Fire, CDE, etc. He was also on the Board of Directors and Deputy Supervisor at Guaranty Federal Bank. After his experience at Guaranty Federal, he had a vision for a bank that originated and was run locally with hometown values. After many years at the dinner table making notes on a napkin, David would refine his plan. He finally recruited many individuals, with diverse knowledge, to make his plan become a reality starting, with Billy Adkins. Many other local business entrepreneurs and friends made his dream a reality … thus Legends Bank was born. He was also a proud founder and treasurer of the Clarksville Montgomery County Tractor Club.
A private celebration of life was held on October 5, 2024. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation. A special thank you to Tennova Hospice, and Heidi and Hadley.
Arrangements are in the care of Neal Tarpley Parchman Funeral Home.
