Story by Cliff Whittaker

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Downtown Artists Co-op (DAC) will present an art talk Sunday, Nov. 24 at 4 p.m. called ‘Evolution of a Fine Art Print’, presented by Cliff Whittaker, Brian Dewitt, and Glen Edgins.

Cliff Whittaker’s photography exhibit, No Shortcuts, is currently hanging in the DAC gallery and will be used to illustrate the steps in the making of a fine art photograph. This includes selecting the subject, arranging the composition, and calculating the best exposure for the desired end result. Then the discussion continues into the procedures used in Adobe Camera RAW and Photoshop to obtain the ideal color saturation and contrast needed for a fine art print. This part of the program will cover procedures up to the point of uploading the image to a photo lab for printing.

Brian Dewitt is a professional photographer who also owns Atom Prints Fine Printing in Newburgh, Indiana. Cliff selected Brian to print the images in his No Shortcuts exhibit because of the unusual and outstanding quality of Brian’s work. Brian will be discussing the process he uses in taking the uploaded data and transforming it into a work of art on fine art paper. This includes digital prints on photographic paper, photographs on canvas, and photographs on fine art paper. He will also talk about the type of files available for the photographer to upload to get the best tonal quality in the print and the advantages of these files over Jpg files. He will talk about the many types of paper that are available for printing images; the types of printers and the sizes of images that can be printed. And, for the painters who are interested in creating prints from their originals, he will be available to give you information and answer your questions.

Glen Edgins is the owner of The Framemaker located at 705 N. 2nd St, B, in Clarksville. He will be conducting the third part of this art talk and will be discussing what to do with a nice piece of art after you own it. Cliff selected Glen to frame the images in his No Shortcuts exhibit because he wanted a totally different gallery presentation for his fine art prints. Glen made suggestions and showed him framing choices that were available and together they selected a style suitable gallery presentation. Cliff says this probably isn’t the look a purchaser of these prints will want in the home and Glen will discuss other options that are available for different locations and different types of lighting.

The speakers will be available to field questions from the audience at the end of the presentation.

Cliff’s photographs in the No Shortcuts exhibit are being offered at a special low price in the DAC gallery until Nov 30. The exhibit ends at that time and prices will increase.
