SGM Curtis Byers, U.S. Retired, of Clarksville, passed away at age 81. Viewing Wednesday, May 27, 2020, 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. with the funeral to follow at Foston Memorial Chapel with immediate family.
Curtis Jerome, son to Lonnie Byers and Lucille Thomas Byers, began his earthly journey on August 23, 1938, in Ragland, Alabama. His parents, brother, Huey Byers, grandparents, and several aunts and uncles precede him in death. He received his formal education at St. Clair County Training School, graduating in 1956. He attended Alabama A&M University and graduated in 1960 with a Business Mathematics Degree. Curtis joined the United States Army, served in two wars, attained the highest enlisted rank of Sergeant Major/E-9, and retired in 1985 after more than 23 ½ years of dedicated service to his country. He enjoyed employment with Boyd Brothers Trucking and O’Reilly Auto Parts as a truck driver.
On December 9, 2013, Curtis united with Vickie Turner Molina in holy matrimony. He loved spending time with his family and friends, He was passionate about cooking, barbecuing, fishing, playing cards (spades was his specialty); gardening, watching westerns and sports on TV; played basketball in his younger years and according to his brother, “He could HOOK like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; he drove before the age of 16, including a school bus and trucks. All who knew and loved him will sorely miss his presence and smiling face. He departed this life on Sunday, May 17, 2020, at Tennova Healthcare.
He leaves to cherish precious memories his wife, Vickie Molina Byers, Clarksville, TN; daughters: Paula Byers, Hendersonville, TN, and Louise Kyles, Clarksville, TN; grandchild, Tracey Kyles, Jacksonville, FL; sister, Verdell Grand; brothers: Eugene Byers, Wichita Falls, TX and Ronnie Byers, Fort Washington, MD; his 83-year-old 1st cousin, Carl Byers, Gadsden, AL; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
