By Officer Natalie Hall, CPD

Recently, the Clarksville Police Department has taken burglary reports involving homes that are vacant, for sale, being remodeled, or have owners who are in the process of moving.

Between September 1, 2014 and November 18, 2014 a total of 17 such homes have been burglarized in various locations in Clarksville.

It appears that those responsible for the burglaries know the status of the homes, possibly because of indicators like FOR SALE signs, dumpsters that are visible to the public, or published advertisements.

Other residents should be aware that suspects may appear to belong at the homes by posing as individuals responsible for the upkeep of the homes, moving companies, or individuals working for appliance companies.

In several of the burglaries, there has been evidence of forced entry, especially kicked in doors. The most popular items taken from these homes are appliances, light fixtures (ceiling fans, tools, and bathroom items), toilets and vanities.

How can the public help?

Be vigilant in keeping your eyes and ears open to what is occurring in your neighborhood and report suspicious persons and/or suspicious activity to the CPD immediately. Be mindful of the following:

– Call 9-1-1 immediately if you notice signs of forced entry.
– The suspect(s) may case out their potential targets during the day and return when it is dark.
– The suspect(s) often gain entry through a back or side door of the vacant home.
– Once inside the property, the suspect(s) may utilize flash lights or head lamps so as not to turn on lights inside, and you may observe beams of light coming from the property.
– Make note of suspicious person(s) descriptions and vehicle license plates if you can do so safely, and share the information with police immediately by calling 9-1-1.
