CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Clarksville Police Department wants to warn the public about a recent ‘secret shopper’ scam.

The scammers send victims a package in the mail inviting them to become a secret shopper. The package typically includes a check.

From there, victims are asked to provide personal information and are instructed to deposit the check into a personal account to “activate” employment. The victim is told to keep a portion of the money to cover initial expenses, but to wire back the rest of the money.

Scammers like to use the names of well-known companies like Home Depot or Walmart to gain your trust.

Most legitimate secret shopper jobs are posted online by reputable marketing research or merchandising companies. You should always search to make sure the offer is legitimate.

Tips:
-Never wire money to someone you don’t know.
-Never agree to deposit a check from someone you don’t know.
-Never give your personal or financial information out online.

If you suspect something suspicious, report the information to the Clarksville Police Department.
