CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Clarksville Police department would like to remind citizens to practice caution when walking on or near roadways.
Drivers often have difficulty seeing pedestrians, especially large truck and bus drivers. Pedestrians are encouraged to be cautious of vehicles and never take unnecessary chances.
Here are some tips for being safe when out for a walk.
Walk Safely
It is illegal for pedestrians to walk in the road where there are sidewalks, and sidewalks must be used when they are available. If there are no sidewalks, always walk on the left side of the road facing oncoming traffic so as to be aware of any incoming dangers. Groups of people walking on a road should walk single file rather than side by side.
Cross Safely
Before crossing a roadway, stop, look left, then right then left again to make sure the road is clear. Begin crossing, looking over your shoulder for any turning vehicles. Continue to check for approaching traffic until you have finished crossing, and move out of the roadway as quickly as possible.
Stay Alert
Be alert and ready to move out of the way in case a driver does not see you. It’s not a good idea to walk or jog along busy roadways while wearing headphones or listening to music, as this can drown out the sounds of potential dangers such as screeching tires or a car’s horn.
Watch Out
Walk on sidewalks and crosswalks whenever possible, as they are designated for pedestrians to cross safely. It is important to pay attention to walk signals and keep a safe distance when standing on street corners, as large vehicles make wide right turns and occasionally run up onto the corner of the sidewalk. A truck driver is unlikely to see you from their vehicle, and you could be seriously injured or killed if hit.
Make Yourself Visible
Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially when walking at night; dressing to be seen will make it safer for you and drivers. Professional drivers do a lot of driving at night, and there’s a good chance a truck driver will not see you if you don’t make yourself visible. Carrying a flashlight is your safest bet for being seen at night and avoiding a possibly fatal accident.
