CLARKSVILLE, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Police Service Dog (PSD) Leo will soon be enjoying doggy treats and leisurely days basking in the sun instead of finding drugs, tracking down suspects, and helping to keep the City of Clarksville safe.

Leonidas (Leo), now nine years old, was officially approved for retirement through a resolution by the Mayor and City Council, Feb 6.

PSD Leo became part of the Clarksville Police Department’s crime fighting team in October 2012.  Leo was dual purpose trained for patrol activities and narcotics detection. During his 7 years of service to the Clarksville Police Department, PSD Leo patrolled on a daily basis with over 800 deployments and 2000 finds, encompassing everything from small amounts of drugs, to several pounds of marijuana.  He has located instruments used during commission of crimes, searched building and tracked suspects trying to elude police.

Leo has also provided demonstrations to the public, highlighting the capabilities and value of K-9s in law enforcement.

PSD Leo provided loyal service to his first handler, Officer Mark Wilson as well as his current handler, Officer Gary Mefford.  Officer Mefford and PSD Leo have been partnered for the last four years.

PSD Leo will continue to live in his retirement with Officer Mefford and enjoy a life of being just a spoiled dog, after years of dedicated service to the community.

Officer Mefford has a new K9 partner, “Chase”, who will soon be patrolling the streets once training is complete.
