CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW)- Children who are home-schooled in Clarksville-Montgomery County don’t often have the chance to get the exposure to first-responders, police and other law enforcement officials who may visit public schools.
Clarksville Police Department teamed up with Clarksville Fire Rescue, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Tennessee, Montgomery County TN 911 Center and Montgomery County EMS to provide home-school children the same hands-on learning as those in the Montgomery County School System receive.
The First Responder Safety program was held on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at the Clarksville Police Training Facility, and students learned about first responders, stranger danger, 911 use, gun safety, fire safety, and basic first aid.
The call for the special event went out on Clarksville Police Department’s Facebook in October and the slots for 40 students filled up quickly- within minutes.
“With the help of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Clarksville Fire Rescue, E-911 Center, Montgomery County EMS and Fort Campbell Fire Department, the students were provided information about fire safety, the ins and outs of law enforcement, EMT services and the use of 911,”said Jim Knoll, spokesman for CPD. “They observed a TACT team demonstration, apprehension by a K-9 team, and experienced a smoke trailer scenario.”
The pilot First Responder Safety program was so successful and had such a positive response, CPD will offer it again in 2020.
“Thanks to all who contributed and made the program a success,” Knoll said.
