CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) Each year the Legislative Liaison Committee of the Montgomery County Commission presents a wish-list of sorts to Tennessee state lawmakers in hopes items on the Legislative Agenda as it’s called will make its way to the 110th Tennessee General Assembly in January.

At a reception Tuesday, members of the committee presented eight agenda items to the delegation of Tennessee State Representatives Joe Pitts and Jay Reedy who attended the meeting. State Representative Curtis Johnson was unable to attend because of a prior commitment.

Representatives for other lawmakers, U.S. Senator Bob Corker, U.S. Representative Marsha Blackburn and State Senator Mark Green, were also at the reception.

Some of the items on the Legislative agenda included creating legislation to help fight the opioid epidemic in Montgomery County as well as throughout Tennessee, authorization expansion of high speed broadband and internet, and allowing Montgomery County to have beer permitting power over the new Downtown Commons.

Other items included requesting continued support of Dunbar Cave and Port Royal, the two Tennessee State Parks in Montgomery County, and provide state funding for obtaining summer jobs for students ages 15-18 years of age.

Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett spoke at the reception about some of the many successes local lawmakers have had in the state legislature over the past few years and highlighted some of the road projects that could be seen in Montgomery County’s future with the passage of the Improve Act by state lawmakers.

The extension of State Route 374 from Dover Rd. to Highway 149, widening of I-24 from the state line to Exit 11 and improvements to Trenton Road from Wilma Rudolph Blvd. to I-24 were mentioned by Mayor Durrett.

Montgomery County Commissioners who are members of the Legislative Liaison Committee are John Genis, Jason Hodges, Wallace Redd, Larry Rocconi and Tommy Vallejos. Each year county residents are given the opportunity to submit items to the county commission to be considered for the Legislative Agenda.
