CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) Montgomery County Commissioners passed an amended version of the Motor Vehicle Tax, also known as the wheel tax, by a vote of 14-6 at their Monday meeting.
The wheel tax, which is currently $30, will be raised $18. The money will be used for construction of new schools and expansion of existing schools.
Another amendment changing the wording for an exemption for nonresident military personnel was also passed. Commissioners voted to change the exemption from one per household to one exemption per nonresident service member. Collection of the wheel tax increase will take effect September 1, 2017.
In other business Monday, the 2017-18 Montgomery County Budget was approved with the county’s property tax rate staying at it’s present $3.07 per $100 of assessed value.
Commissioners also passed County Mayor Jim Durrett’s appointments to the Charter Commission Committee for Consolidated Government. Appointees are Jay Runyon, Mark Kelly, Candy Johnson, Katie Gambill, Charlie Foust, Bob Yates, Katy Olitia, Don Jenkins, Carl Wilson, and Jon Hunter. The ten will join the the City of Clarksville’s five members to begin work on a consolidated government charter for Clarksville-Montgomery County.
