CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The 2015-16 budget for the City of Clarksville has once again failed to pass the City Council. The vote was 8-4 Thursday and it was the second time the council had voted against Mayor Kim McMillan’s proposed close to $90 million general fund budget on its first reading.

The main concern of council members is the budget’s proposed 18-cent property tax increase which has been a sticking point ever since McMillan announced the budget proposal. Most council members agree that their constituents want a tighter control on spending by the city and not a tax increase.

CITY SERVICES CONNECTED TO BUDGET APPROVAL

With the end of the fiscal year coming up June 30 and the budget needing approval in two readings by the council, the future of the spending plan is uncertain. If the city does not have a new budget approved by July 1, the city code requires the city must revert to last year’s budget.
