CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Meeting in their regular session Thursday, the Clarksville City Council voted to approve a zone change for a proposed Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market at the corner of 101st Parkway and Whitfield Road.
It was the second reading for the zone change after it passed in September and postponed at the October meeting of the council.
At a September community meeting hosted by City Councilwoman Kaye Jones, many of the close to 100 people in attendance were opposed to the project, mainly because of concerns over increased traffic in the area. Another concern was increased traffic congestion from shoppers traveling around nearby Glenellen Elementary School.
The change is from a Single Family Residential District to a Highway and Arterial Commercial District. Wal-Mart says it plans to make a number of roadway improvements to the area to help ease any traffic problems. Wal-Mart representatives say the Neighborhood Market is not a mini Wal-Mart; it’s a small grocery store with a pharmacy, health and beauty aids, and a fueling station.
