CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – A former Fort Campbell medic pleaded guilty today to killing one of his infant twin daughters.
Christopher Paul Conway, 25, was charged with aggravated rape of a child, two counts of first-degree murder in perpetration of a felony, and aggravated child abuse and neglect in early 2018. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder today as part of a “no contest” agreement.
He will serve 15 years in prison with no opportunity for parole.
According to Kimberly Lund, the assistant district attorney prosecuting the case, the victim’s family was in agreement with the plea.
“This has been a very difficult case for all parties involved. There will never be a sentence harsh enough to ease the death of a child. Adeline was a beautiful baby whose life was taken far too soon. I hope her sister and family can find peace now that this case has been resolved,” Lund said.
Conway entered his plea agreement in Judge Jill Ayers’ court before his bench trial date, which was set for later this month.
The incident
On Nov. 14, 2017, Clarksville Police responded to Cindy Jo Court around 7:19 a.m. in response to a medical call of CPR in progress. Conway’s infant daughter was transported to Tennova Healthcare and was pronounced dead at around 8 a.m.
According to an innocence website set up on his behalf, Chris Conway’s Justification, Conway reported for duty at Fort Campbell at approximately 4:30 a.m. that morning, leaving his wife and twin daughters at home.
Around 7 a.m., his wife Emily went in to get the babies for feeding. The website claims that Emily “found that Adeline had gotten the dehumidifier cord wrapped around her arm and neck during the night. Adeline’s motor skills were developing … and she had just started to crawl and grab things.”
Conway, then 22, claims a detective met him at Tennova, where he was promptly taken to the police station for questioning.
The confession
Conway gave a statement to police admitting to the rape and murder of Adeline. Immediately after giving that statement, Conway tried to recant his confession, according to the innocence site.
The police charged him with the death of his daughter, along with rape, abuse and neglect.
During the investigation of the case, the special operations homicide unit detectives determined the 9-month-old girl had been sexually assaulted and that a cord was wrapped around her neck, causing her death.
Conway’s attorney, Edward Dewerff, could not be reached for comment.
