CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – A large construction industry truck passed through the lower portion of the City Hall parking lot next to Main Street on Wednesday afternoon, when the truck sank into a large hole formed under its own weight.

According to the City of Clarksville’s Facebook page, the truck’s rear wheels broke through the asphalt layer, revealing a visible opening. The truck was removed from the lot by a heavy-duty wrecker service and since its removal, the area surrounding the hole has been secured with safety barriers.

Upon inspection, Director of the Clarksville Street Department David Smith said, “an old cistern was uncovered as heavy machinery dug deeper, and that cistern had, over time, compromised the sub-surface, leading to the hole.”

To repair the parking lot, crews will be excavating the loose material, and then plan to fill the hole with stone and concrete before re-paving, according to the Facebook post.
