CLARKSVILLE, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Being in close proximity to Fort Campbell, Clarksville and Hopkinsville are home to many active duty service members as well as veterans. When planning your fireworks display this year, it is important to consider neighbors who may be negatively affected.

The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that between 11 and 20 percent of those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan return home with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The V.A. said that 12 percent of Desert Storm veterans and 15 percent of Vietnam War vets also suffer PTSD.

While a number of instances can trigger someone to experience PTSD, the lights, smoke and loud explosions produced by fireworks cause can be of particular concern for combat veterans.

According to the V.A., PTSD can cause veterans to relive upsetting memories, feel on edge, or have trouble sleeping.

Symptoms of PTSD may include: extreme vigilance and arousal, nightmares or insomnia, negative changes in mood, intrusive thoughts of trauma, social isolation or hyper-alertness to any movement or sudden change that may signal danger.

When planning your fireworks display this year, consider checking in with neighbors and notifying them of your plans. If your neighborhood is home to those who may be negatively affected, consider alternate means of celebrating, such as sparklers, cake decorating or a bonfire.
