CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Former Clarksville City Councilman Gabe Segovia has passed away.
He died in the early morning hours on Monday, March 23 in Cookeville following a hospice stay for cancer. In 2011 he was diagnosed with brain cancer and in 2013 he underwent brain surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
In his fight against cancer which he had beaten two times before, close friend Renae Rosson told Clarksvillenow.com, “Gabe asked God to give him the opportunity to share his message with any group of people who would listen. So for the last six months he has shared his story with churches, student organizations, youth groups, prisoners and baseball teams,” said Rosson.
After graduating from Austin Peay State University, Segovia served 10 years as a Student Resource Officer (SRO) with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Segovia’s service to the community he loved continued as a member of the Clarksville City Council from 1997 to 2005, he was a former Vice-Mayor and ran unsuccessfully for the office of mayor in 2010.
Segovia, a former MVP and player at Northwest High School received a spot on the All-Area Baseball Team in 1987. Segovia spent nine of his ten years as an SRO at Northeast where earlier this month he threw out the first pitch for the Eagles home opener. Everyone who knew him also knew he was a lifelong New York Yankees fan.
Because of his medical condition, he was uninsurable and so a GoFundMe account has been created to help with the cost of his celebration of life. Those wishing to donate can also go to McReynolds, Nave & Larson Funeral Home, 1209 Madison Street and make a donation to his account.
