CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Community CARES (Community Advocating Resources to Every Special Citizen) Walk and Expo raises awareness and provides information concerning health, wellness, safety, and education to the community and every special citizen. The Clarksville Association for Down syndrome and City of Clarksville Parks and Recreation have partnered to make the event possible.
This year’s event will be held Saturday, Oct. 12 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Liberty Park and features music, free food, a children’s corner, silent auction, and prizes for the top fundraiser and top team.
Proceeds from the event will go to benefit programs like Technology for Teachers which will award nine IPads to Special Education classrooms in different schools in Montgomery County. Other programs include Totes for Teaching, which gives new and expecting parents a tote with information on Down syndrome, and the Making Memories Program, which annually gives a trip to a family nominated by the community.
According to the Clarksville Association for Down Syndrome’s website, it “started in February 2009. We are parents of children with Down Syndrome who look to each other for support. Our focus is to educate ourselves, as well as the community. As parents, we want to make sure that our children have every opportunity available to them now and in the future.”
Paul LoBianco, a parent member of the group, said it was decided last year to move the Walk and Expo from Nashville to Clarksville to ensure that the money can directly go to schools in Montgomery County and the surrounding areas.
Those interested in the walk can sign up as a team or individual. Pledge envelopes can be picked up at The Peddler, 2012 Wilma Rudolph Blvd, or Sango Pool and Spa Locations (2800 Hwy 41-A S or 1919 Tiny Town Rd).
