CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – At their Monday meeting Montgomery County Commissioners passed a resolution requesting the U.S. Congress to pass legislation that will stop the legal requirements in the 2011 Budget Control Act to halt sequestration.
The resolution also urges Congress and the Department of Defense to keep the 159th Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Campbell, saying the infrastructure and support currently exists at Fort Campbell and the relocation of the 159th would burden U.S. taxpayers.
The Clarksville-Montgomery County School System would also be affected by troop reductions at Fort Campbell, according to the resolution which says 25-28 percent of students are military dependents. The result would be a decline in enrollment of approximately 8,300 students.
The loss of those students would also mean that 500 jobs would be lost within the school system along with the possible closure of two high schools, two middle schools, and six elementary schools.
