CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The Clarksville-Montgomery County Consolidated Government Charter Commission continues to move forward with their work on forming a charter for uniting city and county government. At their Thursday meeting one item on the agenda was assigning committee appointments for members.

Another important item was the discussion on putting together principles to help give the public confidence that the group is committed to the best interests of all the citizens of Clarksville-Montgomery County.

Charter Commission Chairman, Katie Gambill, talked about those principles and the committees. “The Charter Commission met to discuss the principles that we want to use to guide us through this process and it also gives us the ability to go out and meet with more citizens and elected officials to make sure we are representing everyone,” said Gambill.

The principles discussed were:

• No city or county employee would lose their job as a result of consolidated government
• The cause or causes should be stated that are compelling the commission to unite the two governments
• In every respect, the well-being of the citizens should be considered
• In every respect, the well-being of the employees of both governments should be considered
• There should be complete transparency throughout the process
• A charter should be established that empowers the government to operate only with the citizens’ consent and authority.
