CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The Montgomery County Commission has deferred a vote to increase the county’s wheel tax by $50. Any action on the tax, also known as the Motor Vehicle Tax, was put off for 60 days by a motion made by Commissioner John Gannon which passed by a vote of 18-3.

The increase from $30 to $80 was being considered by the commission to be used for building school additions and construction of new schools for the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System. Also deferred was a vote on planned additions to both Barkers Mill and Minglewood Elementary Schools.

Gannon proposed a public hearing, saying, “I think that the taxpayers deserve to hear from the school system.” In a recent presentation to commissioners school system officials said that more funds would be needed for additions to current schools and construction of new schools with the projected growth in student enrollment over the next few years.

A date for a proposed public hearing with commissioners and the school system has not been announced.
