CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (Clarksvillenow.com) The Montgomery County Commission passed the 2016-17 budget for the county at their Monday meeting. There was good news for property owners with no property tax increase and also for some local nonprofit organizations who will receive $130,000.
The tax rate will remain at $3.07 for each $100 of taxable property in the county, for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017. Total taxes due will be rounded off to the nearest $1.00 for each tax bill.
The United Way of the Greater Clarksville Region received $130,000 for its agencies after commissioners voted to approve the funds. An amendment was proposed to drop the nonprofit funding failed and the resolution for the United Way funding passed by a vote of 18-2.
There was some concern about the funding for nonprofits and how the funds were being used by the organizations, but Commissioner Garland Johnson defended the move. “These organizations help a lot of people and they help people in a lot of ways they would not be able to be helped,” said Johnson.
United Way Executive Director, Ginna Holleman talked about the action by commissioners. “The United Way is pleased once again to earn the confidence of the Montgomery County Commission and be able to preserve much needed funding for local nonprofit programs in our community,” said Holleman.
