CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Clarksville-Montgomery County School System has announced it will postpone the start of its football and girl’s soccer seasons until Aug. 31. The decision to delay comes shortly after Governor Bill Lee lifted an executive order, paving the way for contact sports to resume immediately and on time.
The school board’s decision coincides with the idea that Montgomery County athletes still need more time to prepare for their fall seasons after not being permitted to resume activities until after the end of the dead period on July 6.
CMCSS now follows in the footsteps of Metro Nashville Public Schools and Shelby County Schools who have already delayed the start of their football and soccer seasons through August.
Soccer was initially scheduled to get underway on Aug. 17 in Montgomery County, but is now on track to begin Aug. 31. Football was originally supposed to start on Aug. 21, but now teams are currently eyeing a Sept. 4 start date.
In the meantime, teams are still allowed to hold practice with contact.
Two football games have already been cancelled and will not be made up including Northwest at Hunter’s Lane in Week 1 and Kenwood’s week two matchup at Hopkinsville (KY).
Many football teams have already begun to work on rescheduling their lost games for weeks one and two instead for Week 9 of the season which is an open date for all Montgomery County schools.
Notable games that will likely take place on Oct. 16 include the Battle for the Warfield Shield game with Clarksville High and Rossview and West Creek vs. Montgomery Central.
