CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – At the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System’s (CMCSS) formal session Tuesday, January 14, the Board of Education recognized members of the school system and the community with Points of Pride awards for their work and contributions to education.

Tennessee State Representative Joe Pitts and Austin Peay State University President Tim Hall were awarded plaques for being instrumental in the school system’s application to win $40,000 in the Tennessee College Access and Success Network Grant.

The grant funds offer dual enrollment fees for students in the Middle College High School at APSU and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Academy at Kenwood High School.

Also recognized was Amy, McWhirter, New Teacher Induction Coordinator for the school system who recently received the Chidley Fund Academy Scholarship from the Learning Forward Foundation Board.

Learning forward, is the premier international nonprofit association of professional developers and learning educators. This $3,500 scholarship covers McWhirter’s participation in the Learning Forward Academy Class of 2015.

Four staff members of Austin Peay State University, Alaric Kliingard, Derek van der Merwe, Martha Mcllveene and Sheliah Pirkle were given Point of Pride honors at Tuesday’s meeting.

The four had worked to support the December 4 CMCSS Fourth Grade STEM Challenge event at APSU. The activity was a collaborative opportunity to integrate Austin Peay women’s basketball with hands-on STEM challenges with the fourth graders.

The Clarksville Association for Down Syndrome (CADS) was recognized for its support of teachers who submitted grant applications to fund technology in development and educational activities to enhance teacher’s ability to instruct students with special needs.
