CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The 2019 13-AAA Volleyball All-District Team was released Thursday, Oct. 10, as Clarksville High volleyball received the most athletes named to the area team with four.
Sydney Weatherford, Blakely Wilkinson, Jordan Steinsultz and Arya Rogers were all picked by the selection committee.
Clarksville volleyball coach Glen Fox discussed what makes his team stand out from the rest of the competition.
“Our team success comes from hard work,” Fox said. “I know many teams work hard when they start their season, but we as a team practice with the intent on getting better in everything we do. Whether it’s warm up passing or more intense stuff like seam passing or base work. Practicing at a high level gets you ready for anything that might come up in game situations.”
Weatherford received the district’s top honor, winning the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. She averaged 14 kills, 7 digs, 9 assists, 2 blocks, and 3 aces this year for Clarksville.
“Sydney Weatherford is first of all an exceptional athlete,” Fox said. She is a varsity starter in three different sports and excels at each. What I am impressed with first about Sydney is her humility and her approach to volleyball. She never presumes or thinks she is the best player on the court even though most of the time she is. She has only been playing volleyball for three years now and you wouldn’t know it by how well she grasps the concepts in the game. She did everything we asked her to do this year and exceeded our expectations.”
Fox earned Coach of the Year honors for his role in leading the Wildcats on the floor this season.
“First of all, it is an honor to be named coach of the year because there were some very good candidates that were nominated,” Fox said. “I am always humbled when I receive this honor because I know that I am blessed with some very good players and being able to get them to work together for the ultimate goal is something I strive for every season. I enjoy working with our group of girls and making them understand that each of them has a job on the team and we all need to come together to achieve the many goals that we set at the beginning of the year. “
Fox has been the volleyball coach at Clarksville for seven years now and returned to the Wildcat bench in 2014 after taking a brief two-year hiatus.
“We are just blessed with really good players that buy into our system,” Fox said. You can have talent but if the talent doesn’t play together or buy into what the coach is teaching, then that’s where you underachieve.”
