CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Clarksville police want to warn the public about a Facebook messaging scam that targets elderly citizens.

Police said in the latest scam, an elderly woman received a message via Facebook from a man claiming to be with a federal government agency who said she had won a prize.

She was told to wire him $700 and copies of her personal information to receive her package containing cash within 24 hours. She sent the money and information but did not receive a package.

The woman called the man, who told her she would have to pay another $1,500.50 in fees before the package could be delivered.

She sent the money before eventually realizing she had been scammed.

Legitimate organizations will not ask prize winners to send money. Never give out personal information via social media messages or on the phone.
