CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – A Clarksville Police Department (CPD) officer was recently recognized for saving the life of a gunshot victim.
On January 18, 2019 Officer Steven Deering was recognized for his actions during an emergency situation and was presented with a Lifesaver Award, which is given to officers whose direct actions saves or extends the life of another person.
On November 17, 2018, around 10 p.m., Officer Deering responded to 911 call that said a woman had shot her boyfriend in the leg.
He arrived on the scene and discovered a man unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his left thigh. Officer Deering immediately cut away the victim’s clothing, determined the wound was an arterial bleed, and applied a tourniquet.
Emergency personnel arrived and the victim was transported by Life Flight to Vanderbilt Medical Center where he underwent surgery to repair the lacerated artery.
An EMS supervisor estimated the victim had approximately 90 seconds before he would have bled out, but Officer Deering’s actions prevented this from happening.
“The actions of Officer Deering brought great credit upon himself, the Clarksville Police Department, and the City of Clarksville,” CPD spokesman Jim Knoll said.
