CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – A Fort Campbell man has been arrested after allegedly leaving a 1-year-old child alone in a hot car for over four hours.
Clarksville police said officers responded to the Walmart Neighborhood Market (216 Dover Road) June 8 around midnight. When they arrived they found the suspect, 24-year-old Demarcus Lynch, asleep by a stop sign in the parking lot. The officers said he smelled like alcohol and had slurred speech.
According to an arrest warrant, Lynch told police he had been hanging out with his friends and had too much to drink. He said he asked a friend to drive him back home and the next thing he could remember was waking up in the Walmart parking lot.
Police are not sure how Lynch got to that location, but his car was in the parking lot at the time. They found the car running with a 1-year-old boy alone in the back seat of the car. The boy was sweating profusely because the car was running but the air conditioning was not turned on.
Based on the investigation, police believe the child had been alone in the car for over four hours.
Lynch was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect and public intoxication. His bond was set at $25,000.
