CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW)- Clarksville-Montgomery County Education Association held its Every Student Succeeds Reception Thursday night to discuss the Every Student Succeeds act and celebrate students in the county.

Clarksville-Montgomery County School System (CMCSS) was recognized as being ranked higher than the state average in the ‘added value’ category. All of the state averages are based on the Tennessee Report Card average for the 16 districts with 10,000 or more students.

CMCSS high schools were also recognized as receiving higher percentage scores than the state average on subject specific tests. Grade rate for the state is 88.5 percent and for CMCSS the grade rate is 94.8 percent. CMCSS also scored higher than the state average for the ACT composite.

CMCSS 2016 graduating seniors have received $40 million in scholarship offers. Teachers from CMCSS also received multiple awards from the White House and also on regional levels.

The school system was also named Best Employer for the 2016 Best of Clarksville competition.

Northwest High School teacher Constance Brown also wanted to address Every Student Succeeds Act during the reception.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed by former President Obama on Dec. 10, 2015 to replace No Child Left Behind. According to the Tennessee Department of Education ESSA reaffirms the importance of standards, assessment, and accountability and through empowering states to make decisions for students.

Tennessee will remain on its previously approved waiver until then, and all states are required to fully transition to ESSA by the 2017-18 school year.
