CLARKSVILLE, TN − The Clarksville-Montgomery County Friends of the Library proudly marks its 50th anniversary this April, celebrating five decades of dedicated service and support for the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library and its community.

The Friends of the Library was established to foster a closer relationship between the library and the citizens it serves. The organization’s mission has remained steadfast in advocating for library resources, supporting literacy initiatives, and increasing the cultural and educational opportunities available to the public.

The inaugural meeting of the Friends of the Library took place on April 22, 1974, at 7:30 p.m. at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library at the time located on Main Street. Among the founding members were Harriett Wilson, William Allen, Frank Hodgson, Edith Malone, Bill Shelton, Mary Harpel, Clara Jane Douglas, and Virginia Zepp. Their vision and dedication laid the foundation for an organization that has continued to thrive and grow in service to the library and the community.

At its founding, membership dues were just $1 for adults and 50 cents for students—an affordable way for everyone to support the library. Currently, an individual yearly membership is only $5. Since nearly day one, the Friends of the Library Used Book Sale has raised funds and brought the community together. Now a beloved bi-annual tradition, it provides vital support for library programs and resources.

The Friends of the Library has played an integral role in supporting various library programs and initiatives, including Summer Reading programs, purchasing supplies, raising awareness, and fostering a love of learning within the community. As the organization celebrates this milestone, it invites past and present members, library patrons, and community supporters to join in commemorating this special occasion by participating in the Spring Used Book Sale starting April 24.
