STEWART COUNTY, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Garrett Rye was honored Monday night for his act of bravery while assisting the Stewart County Sheriff.
Senator Bill Powers, Mayor Robin Brandon and Sheriff Frankie Gray recognized Garrett Rye from Clarksville the County Commission meeting.
Rye, a student at Austin Peay State University and a previous member of the Explorers of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, assisted the Sheriff during a traffic stop in February. At that time, Sheriff Gray made a routine traffic stop when the driver resisted arrest and became aggressive.
Rye assisted the Sheriff in getting the suspect handcuffed. The subject was found to have past violent history including assault on a police officer.
Rye said he was inside at his grandparents house in Stewart County and said his grandmother, who was on the front porch, called to him said Garret come out here the Sheriff needs help, so I went out there and helped him.
“I feel very honored about it and grateful for it, at the same time I feel like it was just a part of me being a Tennessee volunteer in the Volunteer State,” said Garrett.
The Sheriff’s Office and Mayor Brandon presented Garrett with the Sheriff’s Award.
Senator Bill Powers also presented Garrett with a Proclamation sign by the Lt. Governor.
