CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – For the fourth consecutive season, Clarksville High football has defeated Rossview to win the Battle for the Warfield Shield.

This year’s outcome was decided Friday at Hilda J. Richardson Field on the left foot of senior kicker Andrew Irvin, who knocked through the biggest attempt of his life – 50 yards – to down the rival Hawks 10-9.

“It’s unbelievable to know that the coaching staff we have is as good as they are,” Irvin said. “That they are able to put their trust in me to put something like that up on the board and be able to give me that chance. This will help me out down the road, but more importantly, it’s helping the team and all these seniors. No matter where we’re at on the field, we’re all confident in each other and we have each other’s backs.”

After the Hawks called timeout to try and ice Irvin with five minutes left to play in the fourth quarter, the senior silenced the Rossview faithful by booting a 50-yard, and eventual game-winning, field goal.

“This win means everything,” Irvin said. “I went to Rossview all the way through seventh grade, so I know a lot of those guys that were over there. I wouldn’t replace this feeling with anything else. It’s definitely the best feeling I could ever have.”

Clarksville High football coach Isaac Shelby had no second thoughts when it came to sending out his kicking team in that particular situation.

“Andrew came up big,” Shelby said. “He deserves every bit of that. You can’t lock him out of this building. I’ll come up here on Sunday nights to mow the grass and he’s kicking by himself. I’m super proud of him.”

Rossview was able to get the ball to midfield on their final possession of the game, but the Wildcat defense held strong to turn the Hawks over on downs before lining up in victory formation.

“It was one of the best high school games I’ve ever been a part of,” Shelby said. “Rossview and Todd (Hood) did a great job. Their kids played really hard. There were ups and downs and we overcame an incredible amount of mistakes that we did to ourselves, but we were able to get it done.”

Game summary

Junior kicker Christian Sanchez put the Hawks on the scoreboard first, drilling a 29-yard field goal with just under six minutes remaining in the first quarter to make it 3-0.

The score was set up by senior Michael Arthur who took a swing pass deep into Clarksville territory to convert on 3rd and long.

After shutting out the Wildcats for the entire first half, the Hawk defense gave up a score on the first play from scrimmage to start the third quarter.

Rossview received the second-half kickoff, but botched the return which resulted in Clarksville regaining possession.

“It was a big deal,” Shelby said. “The field goal was huge, but he (Irvin) made two other kicks that were big. I was the target on the sky kick that they fumbled. I was standing on the sideline and he kicked it right to me. It was perfect. Then he put the ball in the end zone after the field goal. He just played good tonight.”

Junior running back Jamar Carnell then ripped off a 32-yard touchdown run, as CHS went out in front 7-3 after the made extra point.

“We have two great running back coaches in Jay Bailey and Isaiah Johnson,” Shelby said. “They challenged our guys at halftime. Jamar came out, listened to his coaches, hit the first one hard and then cut it back to the house. That swung the momentum of the whole game.”

With 11 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Hawks quarterback Garrett Diemel hit Seneca Bradley for a 45-yard touchdown to give Rossview a 9-7 lead before Irvin put the Wildcats back in front for good.

Up next

Rossview (0-3, 0-1) will face Northeast Friday, Sept. 10, on the road in an in-city matchup.

Clarksville (2-1, 1-0) will travel to take on Dickson County Friday, Sept. 10 for their fourth game of the season. Shelby is optimistic he will be able to witness continued improvement from his group in the non-region showdown.

“Carry over some momentum,” Shelby said on what he hopes to see from his team next week. “Just staying with it. Dickson was a traditional rival of ours in the ’80s and ’90s. I think it’ll be super fun getting back to playing them again.”
