CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – With hundreds of homes damaged by floodwaters this weekend in Montgomery County, several organizations, principally the Red Cross, YAIPAK and the United Way, have stepped up to help residents in need.
YAIPAK has set up an emergency daytime relief center at its 1255 Paradise Hill Road facility. Anyone affected by the flood can go there to rest, eat and get donations of clothing. Residents will also be connected with recovery resources. As of Monday afternoon, they had helped over 20 families, founder Sherry Nicholson told Clarksville Now.
“We as an organization are registering them to track their recovery,” she said. That means connecting them with the Red Cross for insurance purposes, and for emergency financial support if they are eligible.
“They’re getting their immediate needs met, whether that’s new clothes, food for hotels, personal hygiene items – anything they need,” Nicholson said. “Then, once they start going back, we’ll make sure to give them all they need for muck-outs and cleanup.” That may include connecting residents with volunteers who can help with cleanup. Or it might include air mattresses or furniture, when the time is right.
“Whatever they need, we’ll just keep going,” she said.
The YAIPAK center is daytime only, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., but volunteers will make sure anyone needing a place to stay is taken care of.
For overnight shelter, the Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter at the Crow Recreation Center, 211 Richview Road.

How you can help, donate
Please, DO NOT donate used clothing or other used items during a disaster. This creates a “second disaster” of unusable items filling donation sites.
YAIPAK will be releasing strategic needs lists and posting them on the YAIPAK Facebook page and on the YAIPAK website. As of Sunday, current needs range from tarps and shovels to baby formula and bottled water. See the most recent strategic needs lists for updates.
Monetary donations are also needed, to “fill the gaps” where they don’t have enough of certain donated items. To donate, go to the YAIPAK Give website.
In the coming days, additional volunteers will be needed to assist with cleanup. Watch for announcements as those opportunities arise.
