CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – It was a hot day as over 75 hopeful firefighters turned out for a practice session for the physical agility testing to be a Clarksville Fire Rescue firefighter. Clarksville Fire Rescue is looking for applicants, and is accepting applications through July 20.
Capt. Michael Rios described some of the things taking place in the practice session for the physical agility test, held on Saturday. The included turning a fire hydrant on and off, dragging a 150-foot hose 100 feet, crawling through an attic simulator, simulating cutting open a roof, climb a four-story tower and pull up a hose pack, and climb back down the tower and drag a 165-pound dummy. In actual training, a firefighter in training would have to do all of those activities in eight minutes or less.
Fire Chief Freddie Montgomery said they were giving some people insight and looking at their technique and things that can improve their time, because it’s a competitive process.
“With over 300 applicants, we want to give everybody an opportunity to get out here and see where they can improve,” he said.
Logan Bennett was the first in line for the practice and talked about why he was braving the heat for the practice session.
“I’ve been wanting to serve for a long time, and what better way to serve than as a firefighter? I was born and raised in Clarksville and just wanted to try my hand in serving the community,” said Bennett.
Another practice event for the physical agility test will be held Saturday, July 18, starting at 10 a.m. at Fire Station 1, 802 Main St. in Clarksville. To apply, go to www.cityofclarksville.com and look under the “View Current Jobs” button for the firefighter job posting.
