CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The world’s largest fundraising event to end cancer is coming up in Clarksville-Montgomery County with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life on Saturday, May 11 at a new location this year, Governors Square Mall.
Relay for Life will take place from noon until 9 p.m. in the parking lot of the former Sears store at the mall. Groups, businesses, and churches are encouraged to join the family-friendly fundraising festivities with a campsite or other activity.
Relay for Life is not a running event, but a walking track will be set up as in years past and participants are asked to have team members spend time walking on the track to symbolize that cancer never stops, and you can never stop fighting it.
The event brings the community together for a day to celebrate survivors of cancer, remember loved ones that have been lost to cancer, and show support for fighting the disease.
Relay for Life Co-Chairman, Melissa Hogan, talked about the theme for this year’s event which is ‘Closing the Book on Cancer.’
“The idea is that each one of our team campsites is going to try and create their entire campsite themed around a book,” Hogan said.
Along with all of the themed campsites, Clarksville Fire Rescue will be there with their obstacle course and the Montgomery County Antique Tractor and Engine Club will have a display and a kid’s train. Many of the campsites will feature games or food.
Hogan said she is constantly asked how much money raised locally goes back into Montgomery County.
“Last year we raised $86,000 and that went to help 123 Montgomery County residents,” she said.
