Clarksville, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Clarksville Christian softball team traveled to Northwest High School for a matchup with the Vikings on Thursday. The Centurions built an early lead, and never relented, earning them a 11-2 win on the road.
The bats were hot for Clarksville Christian early, with Reese Cocke leading the way, earning three hits on the night. Farrah Waller and Charlese Teasley also both collected 3 RBI’s a piece to help build a 7-0 after two innings.
“We’ve been working on our bats, and it showed,” said Centurion’s head coach Travis Cocke. “We had hit at really good times, and I’m proud of our really young squad for doing that. Our pitchers and catchers worked well together as well and kept the defense solid.”
The Vikings didn’t go quietly, however, as Tavasia Buckley blasted a two-run homerun over the fence in the bottom of the third to cut the lead down. Northwest head coach Gregory Clark said that the slow start hurt, but the fight his team showed is something they can build off of.
“The slow start hurt, lots of nerves with a lot of young kids,” said Clark. “We’re just getting them up to speed and to play at game speed. We had a lot of opportunities with runners on base, and we need to hit in those spots and be more aggressive. It’ll come as the season progresses.”
Centurion pitcher Anna Cheasty came in relief following the home run, and shut down the Vikings offense, allowing one hit in 3.2 innings and striking out six. Clarksville Christian tacked on four more insurance runs and earned a big inner-city win, 11-2.
“Super proud of the way they competed tonight,” said Cocke. This team is coming off of a state championship runner up last year, and we lost a lot of that lineup, so they’re learning the varsity game quickly. We’re going to go back to work tomorrow and compete this weekend.”
