CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW)- Mrs. Edith Poindexter is a local beloved centenarian who on Jan. 28, 2020 celebrated her 103rd birthday.
Mrs. Edith Poindexter is a resident of Ahava Healthcare of Clarksville and was surrounded by her family, church members, friends, and staff of Ahava who all love her dearly as she celebrated her vitality and longevity.
She was also recognized by Mayor Joe Pitt’s office with a certificate commemorating her status as a local centenarian.Mrs. Poindexter is the last living person in her immediate family and had 19 siblings.
Her life was met with tragedy when her husband, Napolian Poindexter, 39, was killed in a traffic fatality in June 1954. She was left to raise her two sons and one daughter on her own.
She began working at Clarksville Memorial Hospital in 1964 in the housekeeping department and also worked at Ahava where she now lives.
Edith is a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is a member of the American Legion Auxiliary #143, The plaque on her wall given to her on her 98th birthday States she at that time was the oldest member.
“I don’t let nothing stop me as long as I’m able to move,” Poindexter said. “…As long as I can do it I don’t want anyone to try and stop me.”
Along with these words of wisdom, Mrs. Poindexter spoke at her party, leaving many emotional.
Amber Malone, director of Marketing at Ahava Healthcare of Clarksville, said Edith loves to talk about her parents and the love she had for them. She says they taught her right from wrong her whole life.
“Edith is loved by anyone who knows her and it is a joy to sit and listen to her tell stories of her childhood and her faith in God,” Malone said. “We at Ahava are happy she calls our place home. We love you Edith and Happy 103rd Birthday.”
