CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Sometimes a clean, freshly-made bed is the best thing a soldier can come home to after a long deployment overseas.

Clarksville business owner Cindy Greene and her mother, Lillian Cheatham, were inspired to help returning single soldiers by laundering new sheets for their homecoming at Fort Campbell.

Greene got the idea from Kay Drew, headmaster at Clarksville Academy where Greene’s son goes to school.

Drew’s husband works with the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, who will return home to Fort Campbell this week after being deployed to Afghanistan in March.

The USO provided 150 new sheet sets for soldiers returning to the barracks at Fort Campbell and Drew asked for volunteers to wash the linens.

Greene owns Off The Rack Cleaners laundromat at Exit 1, so she and her mother jumped at the chance to help.

“I can’t imagine going over there and doing what they do,” Greene said. “What I can do are little things like this to welcome them home. I feel like our community really tries to do that. Little things like that make a world of difference to somebody that comes home and they don’t have any family or a home right now.”

Greene and Cheatham have been working since Saturday to have the sheets ready for the troops. Volunteers will make the beds in the barracks once all the sheets are cleaned.

Greene has no military affiliation.
