CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) –The Clarksville Academy Lady Cougars hosted the West Creek Coyotes for an in-city matchup. While the Coyotes battled, the Cougars were strong on defense, which led to lots of scoring opportunities in transition. CA took advantage of that, pulling out a 77-20 win.
The Cougars ran the break from the jump, led by guards Layla Clark and Sicily Robinson, who combined for 18 points on the night.
Academy head coach Charles Clark said the fast approach is a strength of their team.
“We like that up and down style of play,” said Clark. “We feel like over four quarters we’re going to be the team that can last. It really plays into our favor when teams start to run. Every girl is giving us everything they have right now, so I’m really proud of them.”
While West Creek was able to create opportunities offensively, highlighted by guard Nicole Cushenberry’s ability to get to the cup, the scoring of forward Anna Hellums (15 points) ended up being the deciding factor.
“City games are always great, they’re all friends and they compete,” said Clark. “The crowd was great, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to get better. We have a short bench, but everyone comes in and contributes. Defensively is where we hang our hats, we’re checking boxes there.”
