CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Clarksville Academy football (7-3) hosted their final home game of the regular season against Mount Juliet Christian Academy (1-9) on Friday.

The Cougars entered the contest against the Saints riding a two-game winning streak. Before the night was over, Clarksville Academy expanded that streak to three with a 49-13 victory.

CA dominated their opponents on Simpson Field and controlled the game on both sides of the football.

Offensively, Clarksville Academy was led by quarterback D.J. Merriweather, who made plays with his arm and his legs throughout the first half. He attacked and tested the MJCA secondary to begin the game, and it paid dividends early on. The quarterback set up wide receivers Jacques Wyatt and Cooper Wallace for success, whether he delivered a jump ball to his playmakers, or a series of short passes in space.

The three skill position players would make Cougar history. Merriweather broke the school record for passing yards in a season. The quarterback now sits alone in Clarksville Academy record books with over 2,000 yards passing.

As for Wyatt and Wallace, both of the wideouts broke the school record for receiving yards in a season as well. They each reached 1,000 receiving yards. Wyatt is ranked first in record books, and Wallace is now second.

“These have been records we’ve been keeping track of for a couple of weeks now,” said Clarksville Academy Head Coach Scott Murray. “These individual awards have helped our team be successful, but these awards also show it’s been a great team effort.”

Coaches corner

“This team has meant everything,” Murray said. “We have faced so much adversity during this season, but our kids have somehow found a way to win games. Throughout this process, we continued to believe and continued to work, which will forever make this team special with everything they’ve accomplished and fought through already.

“The team talked about peaking at the right time, but I’m not sure if we’ve peaked or if we’ve played our best game. Nevertheless, we’ve played well. I didn’t feel like we played well early tonight, but our backups came in tonight and did a good job. It’s very important to go into the playoffs on a high note, and I think our players, coaches, fans and community are excited about where we are right now.”

Clarksville Academy will host the first round of the playoffs at Simpson Field and will face the winner of the Lakeway Christian Academy and Webb School game. The Cougars defeated Webb earlier in the season but did not face Lakeway Christian.
