CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Clarksville Academy announced to its faculty Thursday morning that head boys basketball coach Damarius Smith has left the private school “to pursue other opportunities.” Smith resigned on Wednesday, the email said.

“While we are sad to see Coach Smith leave, we wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Clarksville Academy said in the email, obtained by Clarksville Now. “We are working to fill his position quickly, but we have complete confidence in Coach (Charles) Clark and his ability to lead our students in their daily PE classes. We will employ a substitute teacher to help in this capacity.”

Clarksville Now has reached out to Smith for comment.

Sean Jones will serve as the interim head coach, and will lead the Cougars through the rest of the season, CA spokesperson Sally Allen said.

The Cougars are in the final week of their regular season and currently sit third in the standings for the middle district of Division II-A. Academy has a game against Nashville Christian Thursday night and finishes their regular season against Mount Juliet Christian Friday. Postseason play starts next week.

Damarius “DeeDee” Smith served less than one season as head coach for the Cougars. He had worked at Clarksville Academy since 2020.

A Clarksville native, Smith graduated from Kenwood High School, where he averaged 22 points per game during his senior year, according to previous reports. He was a McDonald’s All-American nominee. He then played at Lipscomb University and Vincennes Community College, and he finished his college career with Austin Peay State University from 2013-15.
