CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – With the State of Tennessee preparing to open a new Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Service Center in Clarksville, two convenience centers for the City of Clarksville will stop offering DMV services effective June 30 – almost a month before the new DMV opens.

The convenience centers at both City Hall, 1 Public Square, and the North Services Center, 111 Cunningham Lane, will no longer be offering any DMV services, but all other city services will continue to be provided, according to a city news release.

The new state DMV facility is under construction at 635 Hornbuckle Lane, near Exit 11 of Interstate 24. It will have approximately 7,500 square feet and 13 service counters. Under the state’s current timetable, it is scheduled to open July 28.

When asked why the city is ending DMV service almost a month before the DMV facility opens, Mayor Joe Pitts told Clarksville Now it’s due to the new fiscal year beginning on July 1.

In recent months, a surge of residents have been lining up to access DMV services in order to get their Real ID, which is now required for airline travel or to get access to Fort Campbell. The city began offering Real ID services in October 2022, in anticipation of the need.

Clarksville has an existing DMV service center at 220 W. Dunbar Cave Road, but it frequently has wait times of hours, even without this year’s Real ID rush. Many Clarksville residents also use state DMV service centers in Springfield and Erin to avoid longer wait times here.

“The City of Clarksville has been pleased to assist the state of Tennessee, by providing this service while the new service center was under construction,” said Pitts. “Now that the new center is nearly open, we recognize, and are confident that the state will be in a position to handle the services needed.”
