CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The City is taking steps to expand the southern end of the Clarksville Greenway in downtown.

On Thursday, March 7, the City Council approved an ordinance allowing Mayor Joe Pitts to enter into an agreement to acquire more land to widen and improve the biking and walking trail.

The land in question is to the south of the City’s Valleybrook Park, across Crossland Avenue. It’s roughly northwest of Lawn Street, south of Blackman Street, and east of Bradley Street.

Instead of buying the land, however, the city has sought a trade with the property’s current landowner. The City is looking to exchange around 8,400 square feet of land with Jameson and Patricia Witt, who own around 1,100 square feet of property adjacent to the other tract of land, according to public records.

The contract of sale and exchange of land agreement shows that both pieces of property are “reasonably equivalent” and “each parcel is deemed to be fair and reasonable consideration for the other.”

The agreement is contingent on the ordinance being fully approved by the City Council. With the proposal unanimously passing the first reading, the agreement will be finalized once it passes the council’s second reading at their regular session on April 4.

“Obviously we are grateful for any opportunity to expand our popular Greenway and look forward to adding this leg of the Greenway to the system in the future,” Pitts told Clarksville Now.
