CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Roxy Regional Theatre’s iconic downtown location will become home to a new performing arts center, following a vote by the City Council Thursday night.
After weeks of debate, council members voted 11-2 to approve the purchase for $810,000 for the construction of a new Performing Arts Center.
The final vote on the Roxy purchase was originally scheduled for Jan. 7, but was postponed so that new council members could become more familiar with the issue.
Voting yes were Richard Garrett (Ward 1), Vondell Richmond (Ward 2), DaJuan Little (Ward 3), Jason Knight (Ward 5), Wanda Smith (Ward 6), Travis Holleman (Ward 7), Wanda Allen (Ward 8), Karen Reynolds (Ward 9), Stacey Streetman (Ward 10), Ashlee Evans (Ward 11) and Mayor Joe Pitts.
No votes included Wallace Redd (Ward 4) and Trisha Butler (Ward 12).
The planned purchase enjoyed strong support from the previous council, however, several new council members raised concerns about the cost, location and inclusion of the Roxy Regional Theatre board as management for the building.
What comes next?
The city has a lease agreement with the Roxy Regional Theatre Company, allowing them to rent the Roxy for $1 per year for the first 3 years.
This is a similar arrangement to the one between the city and Customs House Museum and Cultural Center.
Once the new performing arts center is constructed, Roxy will manage the building for the city based on the lease agreement approved by the previous City Council.
While no specific plans have been made for the new space, it is expected to include a 500-seat primary theater, a 120-seat studio theater, offices, meeting rooms, a theatrical workshop and a large lobby.
Correction: Richard Garrett’s ward is Ward 1.
