CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Signs that read “No Cell Towers” and “Keep Them Out of Our St. Bethlehem Neighborhood,” have have been removed following a vote by the board of St. Bethlehem United Methodist Church against a lease proposal by Verizon Wireless to build a cell phone tower on church property.
Neighbors surrounding the church on Old Russellville Pike campaigned against the tower with a petition drive on Change.org and by placing signs in yards citing health concerns and property values.
Church officials held a listening session in July to answer questions from neighboring residents and Monday voted against the Verizon lease agreement.
In an open letter, resident Frances McKillip explained residents’ concerns.
“There is no doubt this 100-foot tower will be an eyesore in the middle of the Rossview/Old Russellville Pike intersection. Property value will plummet for surrounding blocks of this giant tower,” McKillip said in the letter.
