This season has been filled with upsets, unlikely heroes, and domination from top-level student-athletes. Here are the top storylines heading into the postseason.
The Clarksville Academy Cougars traveled to Ezell Harding Christian for the Division II-A Middle Distirct Championship against the Goodpasture Cougars, who are ranked number one in their class in the state. The Cougars battled, but couldn’t get stops down the stretch, and Goodpasture won the “Battle of the Cougars” 65-52.
The Richview Middle School boys’ basketball team traveled to Rockvale High School for the TMSAA Class 3A State Championship game against the Elmore Park Eagles, who had not lost a game in over three years. The Eagles caught fire from three early on and built a big lead, as the Cowboys couldn’t come back from the early deficit.
The Kirkwood Cobras hosted the Kenwood Knights at “The Pit” on Friday night for the final night of the regular season. An absolute classic of a game saw both teams trade the lead down the stretch before they headed to overtime, where the Cobras got just enough shots to fall and earned a 51-47 win to close their season with 21 wins, the most in their program’s history.
The Kirkwood Lady Cobras hosted the Kenwood Knights at Kirkwood High School for the final night of the regular season on Friday. The two teams were battling early, but a 15-1 run in the third quarter for the Cobras allowed them to pull away, and Kirkwood earned a 46-25 win.
The Richview Middle School Cowboys traveled to Stewarts Creek High School for the TMSAA final four, and a matchup with the Bearden Bulldogs. Bearden led for two and a half quarters, but a late 13-0 run powered the Cowboys to a 46-38 win and the right to play for a state championship tomorrow at 1:30 at Rockvale High School.
Austin Peay men’s basketball has compiled a 2-1 record over their last three games played with a test against Stetson University set for Saturday, Feb. 15. The Governors contest against the Hatters will conclude the team’s four-game home stand, so look for Clarksville’s hometown team to finish the week out strong.
The Northeast Lady Eagles hosted the Northwest Vikings for their senior night and a cross-town rivalry. The Vikings built a lead early, and lead from start to finish, earning a 68-28 victory, lead by 18 points from Ja’laysia Hunt.
