Col. (Ret.) Carl Merkt, age 62, of Clarksville, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2016, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Carl was born in Anadarko, OK, son of the late Lt. Col. (Ret.) Frank Merkt and Kathryn Francen Merkt. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Frankie Merkt.
Carl was a 27-year veteran of the US Army. He served three tours at Fort Campbell, KY, during which time he participated in Desert Storm. He was the commander of the 5-101 AVN BN and the 159th AVN Brigade.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 11:00 AM, at Sango United Methodist Church, 3301 Sango Road, Clarksville, TN 37043, with Rev. Willie Lyle officiating. Burial will follow at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West, 5817 Fort Campbell Boulevard, Hopkinsville, KY 42240, at 2:00 PM. Visitation will be Monday, March 14, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home, 1510 Madison Street, Clarksville, TN 37040.
Carl is survived by his wife, Kathy Merkt; two daughters, Cindy (Matt) Thornton and Krissy (Britt) Franks; son, Carl B. (Marlena) Merkt; and five grandchildren, Cole and Owen Thornton, Brittany and Kaitlynn Franks, and Carl Winston Merkt.
